Under general supervision, performs daily work assignments for the Airport Division of the Community
Services Department in accordance with the Employee Manual, Department Policies and Procedures,
City of Alamogordo Ordinances and any applicable State or Federal authority.

Recruitment Qualifications

Required:

  • Sufficient education to read, write and comprehend direction;
  • Valid New Mexico Driver’s License with a driving record acceptable to the City of Alamogordo;
  • One year of custodial, janitorial, or similar experience; 
  • One year of groundskeeping experience; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Desired:
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.

Essential Duties

Essential Duties

  • Maintain the external and internal appearance of the facility;
  • Demonstrate a keen eye for detail to ensure the facility is maintained in a clean and sanitary fashion;
  • Report malfunction of bathroom and kitchen fixtures, light fixtures, and/or damages to inside or outside facility;
  • Report infestations of bugs or rodents;
  • Vacuum and mop floors daily, including routine cleaning of spots and stains, baseboards, etc., throughout the building;
  • Clean carpets and strip and wax floors bi-annually;
  • Clean windows inside and out; screens; window coverings; ceiling fans, and other fixtures on a scheduled basis;
  • Empty and dispose of trash throughout the building daily;
  • Dust furniture and equipment in waiting  areas and offices;
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms and kitchen area and associated fixtures, appliances, partitions, tables, counters, and mirrors daily.  Refill soap and paper dispensers;
  • Clean the grounds by removing all trash and weeds from around the building and parking lot, sweep sidewalks, remove snow, and clean cigarette disposal canisters;
  • Performs grounds keeping duties including but not limited to; cleaning, removing debris from runway and building, mowing, and weed-eating areas around the Airport;
  • Maintains the inventory of supplies and requests re-orders as necessary;
  • Replaces interior and exterior fluorescent and incandescent bulbs;
  • Run errands as necessary;
  • Secure facilities after operating hours by closing and locking doors and windows;
  • Contributes to a high-quality work culture through participation in training and mentoring to develop skills, including safety-related training and skills;
  • Interacts professionally and provides excellent customer service to all levels of City staff and citizens to ensure high operational and service standards; and
  • Performs duties in accordance with the Employee Manual, Department Policies and Procedures, City of Alamogordo Ordinances, and any applicable State or Federal authority.
 
OTHER IMPORTANT DUTIES
  • Must be able to work a variable schedule, including evenings or weekends when necessary;
  • Must maintain required license(s);

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:  
  • Cleaning products, techniques, and standards; 
  • The ability to  understand and use basic computer skills for simple logging of daily tracking;
  • Safety Data Sheets; and
  • Safe operation and use of vehicles, equipment, tools, and cleaning chemicals.
 
Skill/Ability to:
  • Demonstrate proficiency in both oral and written communication; understand and follow instructions;
  • Perform tasks and other daily activities in a positive and professional manner alongside employees of varied backgrounds and personalities;
  • Attend work, as scheduled and on a regular basis, to effectively perform the position’s essential duties and responsibilities;
  • Exercise common sense and good judgment in the performance of essential duties;
  • Demonstrate an ability to communicate with administration and staff;
  • Possess high standard of integrity and professionalism;         
  • Read and comprehend cleaning chemicals and equipment safety labels, and instructions, including warning labels;

Work Environment

  • Must be able to work a variable schedule, including evenings or weekends when necessary;
  • Work is typically performed both indoors and outdoors and may be subject to inclement weather conditions;
  • Daily physical labor that includes extended periods of standing, walking, kneeling, bending, reaching, climbing ladders, lifting heavy objects, swinging mops, brooms, vacuums, etc.;
  • May be subject to repetitive motion through mopping, sweeping, vacuuming, etc;
  • Lift and/or move items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds; the lifting of any object greater than fifty (50) pounds by a single individual is prohibited. Lifting objects, materials, or equipment weighing more than fifty (50) pounds requires the buddy system or the use of devices designed to assist with lifting or moving. Proper lifting techniques shall be used when lifting items of any weight;
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud;
  • May be exposed to hazardous cleaning chemicals used in the performance of duties; 
  • Hazards include exposure to insects, rodents, snakes, and other wildlife typical of the southwest;
  • Work will be performed near moving mechanical parts; and possibly in high or precarious places;
  • Terrain may be uneven or undeveloped; and
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriate for job assignments; including protective footwear, clearly marked by manufacturer, with a minimum standard of M/F I/75/C/75 per ASTM F2413-11.
