olid Waste Truck Driver

Experience Required: Two (2) years of experience driving class A vehicles.

Minimum Education Requirements: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Department: Solid Waste

Direct Supervisor: Solid Waste Superintendent

Supervisory Responsibility: Direct (0); Indirect (0)

Primary Work Location: This employee works outdoors.

Certification: This position requires a valid New Mexico Class A CDL with air brake endorsement.

 

 

Job Summary: Under the direction of the foreman, transports solid waste from assigned transfer station to the appropriate destination.

 

 

 

Essential Job Functions

                                                                                                                                     

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential duties:

 

  • Complies with DOT regulations and maintains a current CDL Class A license.
  • Drives a truck to transport solid waste.
  • Sort and bail recycled materials.
  • Operate heavy equipment including, backhoes, loaders, skid steer, forklift, balers and chipper.
  • Performs daily maintenance inspection on the vehicles driven; adjusts brakes, repairs tarp, removes and replaces tires, as needed.
  • Provides general mechanic services to the department.
  • Maintains work related records; reports equipment failures/deficiencies to supervisor.
  • Operates equipment in accordance with safety rules and regulations.
  • Maintains radio contact with supervisor to receive instructions or report problems.
  • Responsible for knowing and abiding by all department and county policies and procedures.
  • Work on a variety of special projects as assigned.
  • Other duties as required.

Knowledge

  • Traffic laws pertinent to equipment operation.
  • Occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions.
  • Thorough understanding of the County’s functions, policies, and procedures.

 

Skills

  • Strong written and oral communications and relational skills.
  • Use of heavy equipment and power tools.
  • Management skills to analyze programs, policies, and operational needs.
  • Follow and relay complex oral and written instructions, policies, and procedures.
  • Operate a variety of office equipment, including computer terminal, related software programs, printer, calculator, fax, and copier.

  • Consistently follow safety procedures.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

 

Physical Demands

The following physical abilities are required:

  • Employee must be able to move or re-position frequently, up to 50 pounds of materials or objects; occasionally, up to 180 pounds with supportive devices or help. 
  • May encounter toxic materials.
  • Will be bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling, and standing for prolonged periods of time.
  • While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. 
  • The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms.
  • Work in confined spaces and at heights.
  • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

 

Work Environment

Essential duties performed 100 percent outdoors under various weather conditions.  Work surface is subject to wet, dry or greasy natural ground, or asphalt.  May be exposed to exhaust fumes and dust.  Employee is exposed to long working hours and working weekends.  The noise level outdoors is moderate to loud.
