Custodian - Part-Time

Employment Status: Part-Time 

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Experience Required: Two (2) years of increasingly responsible facility maintenance experience for electrical and plumbing practices.

Minimum Education Requirements: High School Diploma or equivalent

Department: Buildings and Grounds

Direct Supervisor: Buildings and Grounds Superintendent

Supervisory Responsibility: Direct (0); Indirect (0)

Primary Work Location: Works inside and outdoors in various weather conditions.

Certification: Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid New Mexico driver's license.


Job Summary:  To perform a variety of custodial and grounds maintenance duties.



Essential Job Functions


An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential duties:


  • Perform custodial and grounds maintenance duties of work areas; empty trash receptacles; clean floors by sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, stripping, waxing, and buffing.
  • Replenish supplies and materials as needed.
  • Perform security checks of buildings and facilities.
  • Use related equipment, power and non-powered tools.
  • Works under Supervision as directed.
  • Other duties as required.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA’s) for Position

An employee in this class must have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities upon application:



  • Methods, materials, and equipment used in custodial and grounds maintenance.
  • Safe work practices.
  • The use, care, and storage of hazardous chemicals.
  • Thorough understanding of the County’s functions, policies, and procedures.



  • Use of tools needed to perform tasks.
  • Written and oral communications and relational skills.
  • Follow and relay oral and written instructions, policies, and procedures.



  • Perform basic level of custodial and cleaning practices.
  • Operate powered and non-powered janitorial equipment
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Interpret written instructions and warning labels on cleaning chemicals.    
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Maintain mental capacity which allows for effective interaction and communications with others.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those in the course of work.


Physical Demands

The following physical abilities are required: 

  1. Essential functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for heavy or moderate lifting; bending, stooping, and kneeling; sitting, standing or walking for prolonged periods of time; and operating motorized equipment and vehicles.
  2. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.  
  3. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. 
  4. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.


Work Environment

Travel from site to site; exposure to waste and infectious materials, noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, and toxic materials.


Safety Requirements

The employee is expected to follow all safety procedures as required.  This employee will encounter noise, dust, grease, fumes, gases, high voltage, and inclement weather conditions.
