On January 11, 2019, The Alamogordo Police Department was made aware of counterfeit money coming into communities in the southern area of New Mexico. There are three types of monies law enforcement is seeing, however none of them appear to be of very high quality and are more readily noticeable. Most of the counterfeit bills are appearing on low quality photo paper and are in the denominations of $5, $10, and $20. These copies will typically have the same serial numbers on them as well. Some of the counterfeit bills have also been found to have Chinese writing on the front of the bill. Higher quality copies of money appear to be yellowish in color and are in denominations of $50 and $100.

These counterfeit bills are being used at dollar stores, nail salons, restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores and small convenience stores. Business owners are highly encouraged to taketheir time and scrutinize cash payments made for purchases, and pay special attention to color, texture, and the writing/print quality on the bills.

Individuals attempting to pass counterfeit money typically pay with other bills and hide the counterfeit money in a stack of real money and either present the counterfeit money very crisp and clean, or heavily crumple the bills up in attempts to make the money look used.

If business owners notice they have received money suspected to be counterfeit, immediately contact the Alamogordo Police Department at 575-439-4300
